As I'm writing this I'm watching another one of my beloved sports teams, the Boston Celtics, take another beating tonight. And to cover up the pain of another loss, I started to think of the positive moments this team has had. And it dawned upon me, it's been 20 years since the C's brought title #16 to Beantown!
Yeah, yeah I know...I shouldn't complain since the Patriots won 3 of the last 4 Super Bowls, the Red Sox won it all in '04 and the Bruins...well, I don't care for hockey.
The C's we're the orignal team I loved growing up. The Big 3, Ainge, DJ, KC Jones and the Boston Garden. I watched old games on DVD and it reminded me how the 1980's C's TOYED with teams like a cat with a mouse. I can still rattle off the names of everyone in that picture I've posted. I grew up during the last great run this story franchise had and now it pains me to watch them rot away into mediocrity.
Since Bird retired back in 1992, the C's have done little to anything right. Each year I watch the NBA draft hoping that the C's draft a savior to this franchise and year after year they draft poorly. Some of stiffs like Acie Earl, Eric Montross, Jerome Moiso, Joe Forte, Jon Barry...pretty impressive for a CBA/NBDL/YMCA team. There we're a few bright spots during this span, such as drafting Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker. But the bright spots are over-shadowed by free-agent signings of Travis Knight, the mid-season trading of Chauncey Billups, and the passing of Reggie Lewis/Len Bias.
A few seasons ago the C's gave us a glimmer of hope by making the Eastern Conference Finals. They we're playing out of their league, but I didn't care, it reminded of the glory years when it seemed the C's made the Eastern Conference Finals all the time. The feeling didn't last long since they got knocked out by the New Jersey Nets. And since they've been bounced from the 1st round of the playoff's back to back season's since.
But what's another year of mediocrity? The feeling has been there for 20 years and counting...
Ok, it's time for me watch some old C games on DVD...
