For the past few years EA Sports have been making the 'Who is the cover athlete for this year's edition of Madden Football?' a bigger deal than it really is. You can't blame EA for making this a marketing ploy since this is the only officially licensed NFL video game on the market. On top of that there's another reason why people are curious who's on the cover. Because coincidentally every year a player is featured that player gets hurt during the season and misses a significant amount of the already short NFL season.
Yeah, football is violent and injuries happen all the time. But what are the chances the player they chose to be their cover boy ends up on the sidelines with a broken leg?
Look at this list of past players chosen:
2007 - Shaun Alexander (Broken foot)
2006 - Donovan Mcnabb (Sports hernia)
2005 - Ray Lewis (Breaks wrist)
2004 - Michael Vick (Fractured fibula in pre-season game)
2003 - Marshall Faulk (Ankle injury, first time in career doesn't gain 1,000 rushing yards)
2002 - Daunte Culpepper (Suffers a leg injury and subsequently killing my Fantasy football season)
So today in an radio interview with John Madden he accidentally leaks who is Madden 2008's cover boy. It's going to be second year player phenom Vince Young. The Tennessee Titan quarterback that played brilliantly in his rookie year gets rewarded with a cover and 6 - 8 weeks on the shelf with a broken arm.
I don't normally believe in this stuff but I'm not taking any chances with him on Fantasy football draft day. :)
